The course deals with the intersection between visual communication design and programming. During the course the students will acquire a basic understanding of code as it relates to graphic design and will write basic JavaScript programmes. The course aims to enrich a student's toolbox with a new tool for designing and a new way of thinking about design. Rather than focusing on learning complex programming skills, we will learn how to read and understand existing JavaScript code, and how to make changes to create something new and unique. The course offers a glimpse into Metadesign – rather than creating a single final product, the designer creates a complex design system. We will work with live data to design generative and dynamic visual outcomes, and create interactive posters. During the course we will discuss ideas such as “open source design” and the rule of the designer as a planner of a living, collaborative system.* The course does not require any programming experience
