The purpose of this course is to tighten the relationship between photography and design, through collaboration between photographer and designer. We will expand and deepen the dialogue between the two disciplines. We will also examine the relationship between photography - image - text - and context - in the context of magazine / catalog and journal. The course will include a large photography project with an emphasis on directing, lighting, composition and Art Direction. Also how to choose the right catalog/book/magazine format, and how to organize Information, Page, and typographic design of a "turning pages" catalog. We will build a photographic narrative, and discuss how to transfer a message through a complex design format. The course will be in a workshop format: Accompanied by our guidance, the students will work in mixed couples (photographers and designers) on a joint project, a Magazine / Journal. They will photograph, write, interview, and design. Together they will make a magazine that incorporates ideas and content that they will explore during the second semester. The final products of this course: three identical photo-based catalogs. Each catalog will contain a minimum of forty pages and twenty photographs.
