Starting from the dispute between Newton and Leibnitz on the properties of space and time we follow the main question on the essentials of science and philosophy up to the 20th century. We dwell on the question of ‘induction’ raise by Hume and the answers given by Kant, later by Mach and others. We describe the appearance of the social sciences at the 19th century and the work of A. Comte. We then describe positivistic trends mostly lead by Mach and Karnap. We end the course with a short description on the main results of relativity theory.
