Visual and Material Culture: Course

The Other

Pimental Dror, Dr., Semester 1, Sunday, 16:30-18:00
The Other is a key concept in contemporary thought, and contains vast political and ethical implications. In the span of the course we will examine the figure and role of the Other in the philosophical and psychoanalytical discourses. The key question to be dealt with will be what is the role of the Other in the constitution of the self, and correspondently, what is the relation of the self to the Other. We will examine this question through readings in Sartre, Levinas and Derrida, as well as in Lacan and Freud. While doing so, we will look at concepts related to the notion of the Other, such as the big Other, Hospitality, Ethics and the Gift.
