Introduction to the History of Jewellery and Metalwork

This course will focus on selected chapters in the history of the field since antiquity up until the beginning of the 20th century. The framework of the course will be 7 lessons (3 hours each) from the beginning of the semester. The first lesson will be a general introduction, outlining the current world centers in the field of jewellery and metalwork (archives and leading schools, newspapers and publications, central fairs, etc.) In the following lessons we will focus on the field through particular prisms (creator, movement, workshop or specific purpose), and according to a cross-section of topics: the development of the concept and profession; materials, tools, automation and methods; formalistic and artistic aspects; influences and cultural-socio-economic contributions.
