Sexuality has been the sphere through which women and men understand their nature and culture, their wants and anxieties, their place in the world and their relations with others. And sexuality has been connected to transgression - from Freud to Foucault, from Nietzsche to Irigaray - transgression in and of culture, the submission to low desires or celebration of unnatural behaviors. In this proseminar we will read from the modern theories of sexuality - specifically sections in psychoanalysis, feminism, queer theory - and examine their possible manifestations in the visual arts.
