It seems that today more than ever before art requires interpretative and theoretical writing to accompany it - to give signs, to put in context, to make meaning and sense. Yet in Israeli discourse surrounding art has been dramatically shrinking in the last decade. This seminar will try to fill part of the gap by closely reading short texts in contemporary theories of art while thinking about the role of art criticism here and now and workshopping some of its possible modalities. We will discuss the persistance of the aesthetic realm, critique in a post-critical age, the artistic image in the age of the spectacle, the possibility of political art in the 21st century, and the relations between the artwork, art and work.
