This course will focus on representations of the pleasures of life in Western art from the 15th century until today. We will review images of eating, drinking, ecstasy and human sexuality as well as iconographical subjects such as the merry company, Bacchus and Venus. The course will map the changing meanings of these different representations, and contextualize them in the social, political and philosophical discourse of their times.
