In this Seminar we will explore our relationships with the objects surrounding us from philosophical, sociological, psychological and anthropological perspectives. We will look into the sources of the separation between subject and object in the history of philosophy, as well as into recent approaches that give central stage to objects, thus remodeling the nature of human experience. We will discuss our relationships with daily objects, the bodily aspects of engaging with objects and the ways in which objects reflect and shape cultural and social values, looking at how objects appear in different contexts, from everyday life to design and art. Against this background we will consider the changing stature of objects, brought about by recent technological advances that allow us to communicate with objects and allow objects to know us, and critically imagine a worldwhere we could engage in dialogue with objects.
