Nietzsche proclaimed the child to be a self-rolling wheel – so why are children constantly being propelled, guided and manipulated? This proseminar course attempts to examine how contemporary culture regards children: how they are portrayed by psychoanalysis and developmental psychology, what presuppositions underlie various pedagogical schools and what purposes are served by children's literature. It will also question the very notion of "child", and reflect on the proper way to treat the human creature in its early days.
