Frank Sinatra believed that “Chicago is one town that won’t let you down”. In June 2012, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem will find out exactly what he meant when the innovative exhibition opens at Sotheby’s in Chicago

On Wednesday, June 21, 2012, the “Bezalel on Tour” exhibition featuring contemporary art works of recent graduates of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem will open at Sotheby’s. The traveling exhibition, which made its first stop at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore earlier this year, will travel throughout North America over the next year.

This is not the first time Bezalel is partnering with Sotheby’s for an exhibition. Last year, Sotheby’s London held a selling exhibition for the academy after curator Janice Blackburn visited Israel in 2010. After looking at student works and talking to Bezalel president, Professor Arnon Zuckerman, she felt motivated to take a selection of the best of past and present students’ works to London. The exhibition was an enormous success and received rave reviews.

“We, at Bezalel, feel honored and privileged to be welcomed back by Sotheby's, this time in Chicago, to display a selection of graduate work,” said Professor Zuckerman. “We are pleased to be able to convey the innovation, inspiration, and talent nurtured within our student body both currently and steadily throughout the past century. This exciting collaboration with Sotheby's befits our reputation as a world leading academy of art, design and architecture, where creativity, quality and excellence are the very essence of our history.”

“Bezalel on Tour” celebrates the 106th anniversary of Bezalel, Israel‘s oldest institute of higher education and a leading international academy of art, design and architecture. Curated by the head of the Ceramics and Glass Design Department, Muli Ben Sasson, the exhibition includes the best of the contemporary works of Bezalel graduates from the last five years from all of Bezalel's Academic Departments: Fine Arts, Architecture, Photography, Ceramic and Glass Design, Industrial Design, Jewelry and Fashion, Visual Communication and Screen-Based Arts, as well as works from its graduate programs: Master of Design and Master in Fine Arts.

The ‘Bezalel on Tour’ Exhibition has been made possible through the generosity of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel, The David Berg Foundation, Friends of Bezalel and Sotheby’s.

The “Bezalel on Tour” exhibit will run until Friday, July 20, 2012 and thereafter, will continue on to the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in Cleveland, Ohio, in the fall of 2012, the Corcoran Museum in Washington in the Spring of 2013 followed by Providence, Rhode Island (venue to be confirmed).

More than 100 years after it was founded by Lithuanian Jewish artist and sculptor, Boris Schatz, Bezalel continues to deliver its message of contemporary Israeli art as innovative and groundbreaking, fueled by local materials and creating a powerful international presence. During the past three years alone Bezalel Academy has exhibited in Orangerie du Sénat, Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, Universität der Künste Berlin, Sotheby’s London and Milan Design Week, among other prestigious venues.
