Guest Lecture | Architecture And Graphic Narrative - Drawing as a Common Thread

Date:
21.5.25

The School of Architecture and the Department of Visual Communication at Bezalel invites to a lecture by Prof. Louis Paillard, ENSA Nantes, France.

Louis Paillard (b. 1960) is a Paris-based, award-winning architect and urban planner specializing in highly contextual housing projects since 2003. His work, including the student housing in Paris’s 13th arrondissement, social housing in Boulogne, and the iconic Copenhagen Iceberg (in collaboration with JDS, SeARCH, CEBRA), is characterized by playfulness, imagination, and meticulous attention to detail at every scale.

Alongside his architectural career, Paillard has nurtured a parallel passion as an illustrator and cartoonist. He has collaborated with the French author Michel Houellebecq, co-authoring a graphic novel based on The Map and the Territory. The duo is currently working on a new project that merges illustration and poetry.

For nearly 30 years, Paillard has been teaching in various architectural institutions across France. Since 2008, he has served as a professor at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Nantes (ENSA).

Louis Paillard is visiting Israel for the launch of Houellebecq’s graphic novel. As part of his visit, he will meet with students at the Bezalel Academy, addressing both architecture and illustration students.

Moderator: Prof. Rutu Modan and Arch. Sharon Rotbard.
