In this course we will discuss the formalistic and narrative characteristics of animation and inquire about the particular experiences of time, space and material that they can create. Together we will trace the relationship between animation and live film, in fiction and documentary. We will learn the history of animation, from its beginnings in 19th century optical toys to the digital animation revolution. We will analyze movement, line, color and sound in popular animated film and television as well as experimental film and contemporary online animation. The classes will include screenings of short animation works, and a weekly required reading.
