In the Department of Visual and Material Culture, one of Bezalel’s few theoretical programs, students immerse themselves in the less-explored intellectual aspects of art, design and architecture. Throughout their studies, they examine social, cultural and historical influences, the main themes emerging from contemporary art, design and architecture from a variety of perspectives and 21st century methods – historiography, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, economics and gender studies.
The program is based on the advocacy of conceptual and content pluralism, aspiring to link the practice of the creative processes with the theoretical aspects that drive it. The curriculum provides students with a broad cultural education, a critical intellectual approach, inspiration for creation and a deep understanding of the contemporary creative fields – specifically contemporary culture and society.
The combination of a wide range of multidisciplinary courses and practical studies provides a deep familiarity with the world of visual and material culture, especially Israel's abundant cultural diversity; the intellectual tools for critical thinking and analysis of cultural phenomena; and the practical tools for effective and beneficial cultural action through current and future technologies.
