This course examines the reciprocal relationships between art and the concept of the city from historical and global perspectives. By analyzing contemporary art practices within urban and political contexts, we will explore the current significance of these concepts and identify the major trends and theories shaping them.

We will survey how theory, criticism, and practices of artists, social activists, collectives, institutions, and policy makers have influenced the interplay between arts and urban space. The course will present examples from around the world, considering their social, geographical, and political contexts. We will explore the evolution of art's role in urban environments - from monumental and public art to community-based and participatory practices - where urban space and spectators become integral to the artwork.

Through this exploration, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic relationship between art and urban environments in the contemporary global context.
