The physical and material aspects of the designed object are given new and varied meanings in the global digital age. In this course we will familiarize ourselves with the craft of graphic design in a deep and practical way. Throughout the course we will shift between, on the one hand, workshop-based learning and the application of these ideas through DIY manual traditions and, on the other hand, contemporary industrial production processes. We will learn about, and experience with, the production of paper, various print types (silk screen, RisographOffset and digital printing), folding and binding, pre-print planning, and appropriate and creative processing of color and image. Practical work will be complemented by  theoretical input on the history of print and its impact on the world of design and on culture more broadly. This course will be enriching for whoever engages with print-based design.
