The Department of Industrial Design invites the Academy’s students, faculty members and graduates to the annual Menorahs and Dreidels Competition, donated by Raanan and Nicole Agus.

For over two thousand years, the people of Israel have celebrated the Maccabean victory over the Greeks and the miracle of the cruse of oil on Hanukkah. We have marked this holiday in the Land of Israel and abroad, either publicly or in hiding, at times of darkness and at times of prosperity, either privately with our families or at public national events. For us, Hanukkah symbolizes revival, hope and continuity and is found at the very heart of Jewish consensus, across all its sectors.

The visual archetypes that comprise this holiday are more closely identified with Judaism than any other symbol, and have been branded into our collective consciousness since a very young age. As civilized people we can recognize the pattern of a chair, but as part of the Jewish people we can identify the pattern of a menorah, no matter how far removed it is from the original image.

You are invited to design a menorah that reacts, utilizes, challenges and plays with the formal archetypes, the ceremonies, the traditions and the rules that make up Hanukkah. In addition, this year we opened an exciting new category: Dreidels.
