A recent issue of the journal Science featured the article “The Complex Affective and Cognitive Abilities of Rats,” a groundbreaking Israeli research. The study compares neurological processes in humans and rats with the aim of gaining deeper understanding of the mechanisms of empathy in the brain. Named among the article’s researchers is Ziv Lenzner, an expert anatomical illustrator and researcher. Lenzner, who combines artistic tools in his research, is known for his contribution to many anatomical studies published in leading scientific journals around the world, including Annals of Anatomy. This is the first time that an anatomical illustration by an Israeli illustrator has been included as an integral part of scientific research findings in the most respected scientific journal in the field.

Ziv Lenzner’s anatomical illustration from the article in the journal Science

Ziv Lenzner is an artist, anatomical illustrator, researcher and lecturer at Bezalel, whose unique work combines anatomical drawing with medical research—a rare field requiring a mix of in-depth scientific knowledge and accuracy and visual creativity. His works, which range from medical research to the culture of the body, are characterized by classical-academic technique alongside a powerful contemporary visual language. Lenzner is among the few artists in the world who combine practical and realistic work with theoretical research in the field of medical diseases better understood with the help of anatomy. Ziv’s anatomical drawings offer a precise image that concentrates on specific details, where digital tools, such as CT or MRI, will give a more comprehensive and not as focused one. The advantage of the anatomical illustrator lies in the ability to isolate a specific object from the surroundings and give it the necessary focus and specificity—for scientific, research, educational or any other purpose.

Alongside his contribution to the study of anatomy, Lenzner has been recognized for his artistic work with exhibitions in leading galleries in Israel and around the world, including: Horace Richter, Neues Rathaus, Wiesbaden, the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, and Arsuf Gallery and Gordon Gallery, Tel Aviv.
