During the course, we will be acquainted with leading interpretation-related methodologies in visual culture studies, mainly phenomenology, hermeneutics and psychoanalysis. We will examine the historical origins of these methodologies, as well as their prominent thinkers. We will track the explanative power of these methodologies with regard to international art (Van Gogh, Duchamp) and Israeli art (Sigalit Landau, Deganit Berest). At the end of the course, students will be asked to choose one interpretation-related methodology and employ it in analyzing an artwork of their choice.
