Exhibition | Beit.Sefer
The Department of Screen-Based Arts, in collaboration with HaMiffal, the Department of Visual and Material Culture, and the Dean of Students, invite you to the exhibition, “Beit.Sefer” – video installations inspired by the stories of graduates of the historic A.D. Gordon School that was once located on the site.
The projects displayed in the exhibition were created as part of the “Video Art” course under the guidance of the artist and filmmaker Maya Zack. In the course, the students created video works and installations that blur the line between art and cinema, exploring the gap between screen viewing and immersion in physical space.
The heart of the project is the students’ encounter with the place and the building itself – located in the Mahane Israel (Mughrabi) neighbourhood adjacent to the Bezalel campus – with its present and past: its historical and archaeological layers, its physical, cultural, revealed, remembered, hidden and forgotten aspects, that are interwoven with the history of Jerusalem and Israel. Particularly poignant is the students’ interaction with a group of men and women who grew up and studied at the “School for the Children of Workers,” which was renamed A.D. Gordon in 1956.
In the wake of the meeting between the students and the school’s graduates (aged 65-75) and with the building itself and its various spaces, the students embarked on developing personal artistic projects (site-specific video installations), that encompass a research-oriented, archival, creative, communal, and human dimension.
