Following the trail: On the eve of the Holocaust & Martyrs' Memorial Day
In June 1941, the armies of Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union's territories. The fate of Eastern Galicia was to become one with that of the Western Galicia Jewry giving the opening sign to the annihilation of the Jewish community, which numbered close to one Million people. The Jewish community, which experienced abuse by its neighbors, were being starved in Ghettos, murdered in shooting pits, and sent to be murdered at the Belzec, Sobibor and Auschwitz- Birkenau extermination camps. At the end of two years, the thousand year old Jewish community became nothing but a vague memory.
On the eve of the Memorial Day commemorating the Holocaust & Martyrs, the Bezalel Center for the Study of the Visual Expression of the Holocaust and the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow, are seeking to look directly at the history of this community, and to follow the point of view of Polish photographers who documented the trail of the Jews during three periods of time. Prior to the Holocaust, During the Holocaust and after it. This process will be led virtually by the Director of the Galicia Jewish Museum, Mr. Jakub Nowakowski.
