Biological Lab for Art and Design – Growing Materials
This interdisciplinary course explores the intersection of biotechnology, sustainability, and creative practice. Students will examine how living systems can be used to grow biodegradable and renewable materials as alternatives to fossil-based and animal-derived resources.
Through lectures, case studies, and hands-on lab work, students will learn techniques for cultivating and shaping biological materials, while engaging with critical questions about the role of designers and artists in shaping a circular and ethical material culture. Students will develop an original project, maintain a lab notebook, and present their process and outcomes.
