3D Printing
Printing the Wilderness — pioneers of additive manufacturing.
At first glance, 3D printing has been around for decades. Yet beneath the surface, a quiet revolution has been gathering momentum, and only in recent years has it fully emerged. Today, additive manufacturing is no longer primarily a prototyping tool—it has become a manufacturing technology in its own right.
Selling digital files for home fabrication is now a common and profitable practice. Printed products no longer advertise themselves as technological marvels; they are simply made this way.
This course explores multiple approaches to additive manufacturing and the design opportunities they create.
Topics include:
- Principles of Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM).
- Designing products that are strong, efficient, and optimized for both home-based and industrial production.
- The unique aesthetics of additive manufacturing: layer lines, hollow structures, lattice geometries, textures, and generative forms.
- Designing and producing tools, jigs, fixtures, and manufacturing aids through additive manufacturing.
- Introduction to complementary digital fabrication technologies, including laser cutting and engraving (CO?, Fiber, and Galvo systems), 3D scanning, desktop CNC machining, and related digital manufacturing tools.
- Overview and hands-on experience with a range of printing technologies, materials, and contemporary applications.
- The course is suitable for both beginners and experienced makers, combining practical workshops with guest lectures, industry visits, and exposure to current developments in digital fabrication.
