Guest Lecture | Artificial Soul: On the Representation and Simulation of Air in Architecture and Urban Thought
The Master’s Program in Urban Design invites to the first session of the Colloquium Series Anima Urbis: The Form of Things to Come: Artificial Soul: 'On the Representation and Simulation of Air in Architecture and Urban Thought'
Shira Noy Goren hosts Uri Wegman, an architect and researcher. Wegman taught at the Cooper Union, New York, EPFL, Lausanne and currently at the faculty of architecture at Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) where he is also conducting doctoral research on the representation of air in architecture. The Triangle Fire memorial in Manhattan, which he co-designed, was recently inaugurated.
In the late 1940s, scientists at the Los Alamos nuclear laboratory began using electronic computers to simulate the behavior of fluids. These simulations aided to build the first hydrogen bomb and laid the foundations for a new technology - computational fluid dynamics (CFD) - which is now also used to predict and describe air and fluids in buildings and the urban environment. The lecture “Artificial Soul” will explore the scientific and visual history of CFD and its implications on the representation of air as an architectural and urban material.
Series host & coordinator: Arch. Shira Noy Goren.
