The Department of Visual Communication in collaboration with Beit Kandinoff and Teperberg Winery invites to the exhibition I Left Behind, a home.

In the illustration exhibition I Left Behind, a home, students, lecturers and graduates from the Department of Visual Communication, some of them survivors of the October 7 massacre or evacuees from their homes, present their work. Over 45 works spread over five exhibition spaces in the historic building at Beit Kandinof provide an interpretation of the new reality through personal stories, memories and objects, with the aim of exposing the audience to the experience of impermanence, foreignness and the longing to return to a home abandoned in the north or the south.

Among the works are personal testimonies, memories and stories that give expression to the notion of home. The illustrator Michal Dubois, a graduate of the department, was evacuated from Kibbutz Hanita in the north. In the series of collage works “Shalom-Shabbat-Shalom,” she recreates the corners of the colorful and happy house, and especially the Friday meals that were known for being a celebration of abundance, laughter and joy. Veteran illustrator Noam Nadav, a lecturer in the Department of Visual Communication, describes the escape of the Fahima family from Sderot on that terrible Saturday until reaching relative safety and rest in a hotel in Jerusalem. Illustrator Yael Volovelsky, whose cousin was besieged for hours in her home in Kibbutz Nir Oz, created a patchwork quilt inspired by the small kibbutz houses that were lost. The quilt’s yellow shades relate to the struggle to return the hostages but also give room for optimism and warmth.

The exhibition is a follow-up project to Wrapping Memory, an illustration project of the Bezalel Department of Visual Communication in collaboration with the WIX company, which seeks to commemorate the beauty of the land of the Gaza Envelope before the terrible disaster that occurred there on Saturday, October 7, 2023, with the aim of raising donations for the affected area’s residents. This project left a significant mark and continues to resonate in Israel and the world, and has so far raised over one million NIS for the residents of the surrounding communities.
