Karin Ben Haim and Rimon Alyagon Darr, graduates of the Department of Ceramics and Glass Design have been selected to display their work at the international artistic glass and design exhibition at the Museums of the Sforza Castle of Milan, Italy.

Part of the exhibition includes the participation of glass artists and designers in a competition for innovative glass works both in art and in contemporary design.

Ben Haim was chosen to display her final project, “Native Creation,” and Eligon Dar was chosen to present her project, “Skin vs. Fabric,” which she created as part of the course entitled, “From hot to cold and back.”

The exhibition will be open to the public from June 29, 2024 - October 13, 2024.

Ben Haim’s final project combines material-chemical research alongside historical-cultural research and presents a reconstruction of local knowledge technology that integrates ancient and contemporary techniques for constructing temporary shelters.

The material research began with an examination of glass as a substance, not characterized as a specific material, but as a state of aggregation that characterizes various substances in the world, including natural polymers. In the past, ancient glass was produced from plants grown locally and belonged to a material culture based on indigenous, local, holistic and reciprocal knowledge, as opposed to contemporary Western material culture today.

In the course of the research, a unique glass was produced, suitable for “cold” manual processing , composed of bio-plastic and ash sourced from a desert plant (Anabasis Setifera Moq), powdered recycled industrial glass bottles, and mineral rocks. After firing, the glass becomes porous, lightweight and heat insulating.

The inspiration for the project was the sensory experience of fabric touching sensitive skin. Alyagon Darr describes her desire to convey this moment, this intense sensory experience, through glasswork.

The project involved stretching hundreds of hot fine glass threads and attaching them to “fabric” surfaces by heating them, then bonding them to glass bubbles created using glass blowing techniques. The resulting forms contain within them frozen motion that captures a single moment of touch.
